• 3.0 out of 5 stars from Smoothiegirl -- This is a Santa Book : I’m sad to give this book only 3 stars because I love the publisher and illustrator. I was looking for something for December 6 that explained the life of Saint Nicholas. The marketing material implied that it would separate truth from legend, so I preordered it. It started out nicely, but ultimately turned into another magical, Christmas-y Santa story. Unfortunately, Santa doesn’t bring presents to the Muslim family next door. He doesn’t bring presents to the kids of Haitian refugees in Mexico. I understand the importance of imagination for children, but I wasn’t expecting that based on the catalog description. If you do the Santa thing and are looking for a book to connect the tradition with Christian history, then this is a great book for that. If you don’t do Santa, then I can’t recommend it. Saint Nicholas is a wonderful tale set in rhyme, gently flowing from history into legend. I’m looking forward to including this in our St Nicholas Day traditions. The pictures are beautiful, colorful, and fun. And the story retold is full of history of the Christian tradition that will make the book a classic Christmas go-to. The beautiful illustrations and poetic retelling appeal to kids of all ages - even my two year old! I also love how it refocuses the season and St Nick by pointing to Christ.
