  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from CK WindyCity -- great book for navigating your career : Working for bosses who don't truly "see" or even value their people. They make no attempt to relate ... been there, done that. It was mind-numbing to listen to talent discussions where sexist comments were made. Ugh. I appreciate this book's straightforward, practical advice on navigating organizations where there is a "bro culture." Or ageism, racism, sexism--these are all issues we're facing now and into the coming years. The companies who figure it out are going to be light years ahead of the competition. this book can truly make an impact if you read it and follow her steps to bring more diversity & belonging to your workplace. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Deidra Somerville, PhD, MSW -- I recommend this book. : I've read numerous books on leadership and leadership management. Rarely have I found one that actually differs from the echo chambers that we often find ourselves in while reading such books, or tempting to adapt to the practices they often recommend. Leading Below the Surface (Wilkins, 2021) fills an important and necessary gap in the language used and context applied to this field of literature. We need to have new and different conversations about leadership within organizations in all sectors. Wilkins offers a great resource that gives us different ways of talking about leadership, reflecting on our experiences with leaders and as leaders, and strategies that can transform how we bring DEI from the margins to the center of organizations. Wilkins rightfully points out that DEI initiatives are often "othered" while trying to address the concerns and tensions around a culture that routinely "others" all those who don't fit or won't fit into very narrow and suffocating standards and expectations. I see the strategies offered in Leading Below the Surface as a clear response to the current tensions around DEI initiatives. If only we have the courage to do what Wilkins has done: look at our own experiences and have the courage to see and say what is often true about the organizations we work within.
